[Need Help] Motherboard or CPU broken?
Hey Guys!,
I am having a PC from my friend to fix it, i tried everything but with no luck so.. i have a:
Spec:
Intel Pentium D805 2.66GHz,
Biostar P4m900 motherboard,
1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Radeon x1550 256mb.
when i turn on, stays maybe 10 sec and it shutdown. I took everything from it, and i know that should be beeping if i took RAM out, but nothing. I tried putting the processor in my PC and it is working about 5 sec and the same is happening.
Thx

If the processor does not work in another PC, well it's fried. Try another (from a place you can take it back to) and see if it works.

I have more experience in Linux then hardware, but that's why I'm trying to help, because I am trying to learn.
Are any of the capacitors bulging or broken? That would tell me the mobo is dead.
Mobo might be dead all the same though... do you have some other way of testing the CPU? A compatible mobo by any chance?

Check the motherboard carefully for burn marks around the connections plugs etc.. and soldering points, or for any cracks... if the board is damaged it should be visual, and get more information from your friend as to what happened just before the problem occured.. nearly all circuit boards of any type that are damaged will show up...is the wiring damaged or brittle in anyway..what lights show up when you try to boot up check the back of the pc for any red LED's ..
Was it a power surge that caused this ?

I had a similiar problem a few years back with a Gateway computer and it turned out to be the motherboard. I'm betting that is the case, rather than the processor, but if you have a way to test the processor on another compatible motherboard, that would be worth a shot.
